Bridgerton star Phoebe Dynevor brings period piece to Birmingham city centre

A busy Birmingham street was transformed into a scene from the 1920s as a new biopic was filmed there.

Old vehicles from the 1920s era including an open top bus were set outside on Corporation Street, which had been turned into a showroom for The Colour Room.

It also saw stars of popular programmes such as Bridgerton, the Crown, Call The Midwife and Meal for Two take in the sights and sounds of Birmingham city centre during filming.

The film tells the story of Clarice Cliff, played by Bridgerton star Phoebe Dynevor, who became a rising star in the pottery industry in Stoke-on-Trent.

Dynevor, who shot to fame over Christmas for her role as Daphne in Regency romp, was seen filming scenes in Apache’s Bar and Restaurant with the unique brick buildings of Corporation Street forming a colourful backdrop.

She was joined in filming by Matthew Goode, who has taken on the role of Colley Shorter, the factory owner who became impressed by Clarice’s work and helped stoke her talent.

Matthew Goode starred as Antony Armstrong-Jones in the Crown, and was joined by Call The Midwife’s Bronwyn James, Laura White, who appeared on The X Factor, Birdcage’s Safia Oakley Green and Meal For Two star Anna-Kate Golding.

The film shows how Cliff broke the glass ceiling to revolutionise the workplace during the 20th Century and is directed by Claire McCarthy.

Dynevor said: ‘I am so excited to be joining the cast of The Colour Room, especially in the role as one of the nation’s most celebrated artists, Clarice Cliff.

“It’s truly such an honour to take on such a remarkable character.

“The script is a beautifully written contemporary take on the 20th century, and I feel proud to be working with such a strong female team, both in front and behind the camera.”

“I look forward to telling Clarice’s story and of course working with Matthew too.”

As production ramps up for kick-off on the Sky Original movie ‘The Colour Room’ it’s announced that both ‘Bridgerton’ star Phoebe Dynevor and the always wonderful Matthew Goode have joined the cast.

The film is based on the rise to fame of legendary Stoke-on-Trent ceramic artist Clarice Cliff, played by Dynevor. Goode takes on the role of  Colley Shorter.

The Colour Room

The film follows the journey of a determined, working-class woman, Clarice Cliff, as she breaks the glass ceiling and revolutionises the workplace in the 20th century.  Clarice Cliff (Dynevor) is a vivacious young factory worker in the industrial British midlands of the 1920s.  Her creativity and ambition drives her to move from factory to factory, despite the financial impact on the household she shares with her widowed mother Ann (Kerry Fox) and youngest sister Dot (Darci Shaw).  Bursting at the seams with ideas for colours and shapes, Clarice takes more and more dangerous risks – but she manages to stay one step ahead of the workhouse and impress the eccentric factory owner Colley Shorter (Goode) on the way with her talent and innovation.

Apprenticed to renowned Art Designer Fred Ridgeway (Morrissey) and with support from Colley and other women in the factory, Clarice fights her way through to design the unprecedented Art Deco ‘Bizarre’ range.  In the middle of the Great Depression, she ensures the factory’s survival and her future as one of the greatest Art Deco designers and a household name.

Phoebe Dynevor, comments: I am so excited to be joining the cast of The Colour Room, especially in the role as one of the nations most celebrated artists, Clarice Cliff.  It’s truly such an honour to take on such a remarkable character. The script is a beautifully written contemporary take on the 20th century, and I feel proud to be working with such a strong female team, both in front and behind the camera.  I look forward to telling Clarice’s story and of course working with Matthew too.”

Additional cast confirmed includes David Morrissey (The Walking Dead), Darci Shaw (Judy), Kerry Fox (Rare Beasts) and Luke Norris (Poldark).

Claire McCarthy will direct from a screenplay by Claire Peate. The film is produced by Thembisa Cochrane (The Harvesters) and Georgie Paget (Queens Of Syria) for Caspian Films, in association with Denaire Motion Picture Poetry and co-producer Neil Jones (Farming).

The film will start production later this month in Stoke-on-Trent and Birmingham and will be released in cinemas and on Sky Cinema later this year.
